Self-Hosted Forms Revisited: A 2026 Cost Breakdown vs Typeform, Tally, and Jotform
==================================================================================

 Manuk Minasyan · August 7, 2026 · 10 min read

The renewal invoice from Typeform landed on a Tuesday. Plus plan. A thousand responses a month. Twelve months at the annual rate, sitting there waiting for a click.

I didn't click it. I opened a spreadsheet instead.

This is the post I wished existed two years ago, when I was paying for a SaaS form tool inside a Laravel app I already paid a server to run. Nobody had sat down and written out the actual numbers across the three big players and a self-hosted option in the same table. They'd written listicles. They'd written affiliate roundups. They hadn't written the math.

So I did. A 2026 cost breakdown of the Typeform alternative cost question, run across three usage tiers — Hobby, Growth, Scale — and four products: Typeform, Tally, Jotform, and FilaForms. Pricing pulled from each provider's pricing page on the day I drafted this. Annual totals where they help. And, because I refuse to write a comparison post that pretends every competitor is bad, three honest sections on where Typeform, Tally, and Jotform still earn their keep.

If your form is the product, you should probably keep paying for the survey-feel. If your form serves the product, the math says something different. Either way, you'll know which one you are by the end.

How I did the comparison
------------------------

I pulled live pricing from the [Typeform pricing page](https://www.typeform.com/pricing/), the [Tally pricing page](https://tally.so/pricing), and the [Jotform pricing page](https://www.jotform.com/pricing/) on the day I drafted this. I matched plans to three usage tiers: Hobby (around 100 responses a month), Growth (around 1,000), and Scale (around 10,000). For each tier I picked the cheapest plan that includes that response volume without overage charges.

Apples-to-apples is hard. Typeform, Tally, and Jotform are subscriptions: you pay every month, every year, forever. FilaForms is a one-time license: pay once, own it, run it on your own server. That changes the shape of the cost, not just the size. A subscription is a forever bill. A license is a one-time bill plus whatever the server costs you.

I'll write the numbers both ways. You decide which one fits your team.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Typeform, Tally, and Jotform?
---------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. The cheapest alternative depends on your usage. Tally's free tier covers unlimited submissions with branding. FilaForms is a one-time-license self-hosted form builder for Laravel — $99 to $699 depending on tier — with no per-response cost and no monthly fee. For Laravel teams that already run a server, self-hosting usually beats the three SaaS options on annual cost beyond the first year.

The 2026 pricing table
----------------------

Usage tierTypeformTallyJotformFilaForms (self-hosted)Hobby — 100 responses/moBasic: $39/mo ($468/yr)Free: $0/moStarter: $0/mo (with branding)Solo: $99 one-time + ~$15/mo serverGrowth — 1,000 responses/moPlus: $79/mo ($948/yr)Pro: $24/mo ($288/yr)Bronze: $39/mo ($408/yr effective $34)Solo or Unlimited: $99–$199 one-time + ~$15/mo serverScale — 10,000 responses/moBusiness: $129/mo ($1,548/yr)Business: $74/mo ($888/yr)Gold: $129/mo ($1,188/yr effective $99)Unlimited or Lifetime: $199–$699 one-time + ~$20/mo serverTwo notes on this table.

First, Tally is the dark horse on price. The free tier covers unlimited responses with Tally branding, and Pro at $24/mo removes that and adds a custom domain. If you're not a Laravel team and you don't care where the data lives, Tally is the cheapest paid option on this page.

Second, the FilaForms column is a different shape. The license is paid once. The $15–20/mo line is the server you'd pay for anyway if you run a Laravel app. Year one, Solo plus a small box lands around $279. Year two onward, it's the server bill. Compare that to a Typeform Plus subscription compounding at $948 a year and the gap widens the longer you stay.

The hidden costs of self-hosted
-------------------------------

Self-hosted isn't free and I won't pretend it is.

You're paying for a box. A small Hetzner or DigitalOcean droplet that can host a Laravel app runs $5–20 a month depending on traffic. If your app already exists, that box is already paid for and FilaForms rides along for nothing extra.

You're paying for email delivery. Most plans use SES, Postmark, or Resend. SES is effectively free for the first 62,000 emails a month from an EC2 sender. Postmark starts at $15/mo. Either way, the bill is small at the volumes most internal forms hit.

You're paying for maintenance time. Patching the server, renewing the Let's Encrypt cert (which auto-renews if you let it), running `composer update` and `php artisan migrate` when FilaForms ships a version. Call it an hour a quarter at the high end.

The honest line is this: self-hosting costs roughly $0–20/mo on infrastructure and roughly an hour a quarter on maintenance, on top of the one-time license. For most Laravel teams that already run a server, the marginal cost of running a form tool on it is close to zero.

Where Typeform still wins
-------------------------

If your form is a market-research instrument and the survey-feel is the product, Typeform earns its price. I won't pretend otherwise.

Typeform's one-question-at-a-time UX is the cleanest in the industry. The motion design, the input transitions, the way it makes a long survey feel short — that's a product, not a stylesheet. If you're running brand surveys, NPS at scale to a customer base that judges you on polish, or lead capture where the form is part of your marketing aesthetic, Typeform gets cited for a reason.

[The earlier Typeform writeup](https://filaforms.app/blog/self-hosted-form-builder-for-laravel-why-you-dont-need-typeform) makes the case for switching when the form serves a product. This is the case for staying when the form IS the product. Both are true. Charge what Typeform charges and ship the survey-feel that well, and the line item stops being a cost.

Where Tally still wins
----------------------

Tally is the fastest path from zero to a working form for someone who isn't a developer.

The builder is genuinely friendlier than Filament's admin. A marketing colleague can stand up a form in five minutes. The free tier is generous enough that small teams never hit the paywall. If you're a five-person company without a Laravel app, or your form needs to be edited by non-engineers without a deploy, Tally is hard to beat at the price.

For Laravel teams the calculus shifts, but for everyone else on this page, Tally deserves the share it has. The case where it stops being the right answer mirrors [the Google Forms comparison](https://filaforms.app/blog/filaforms-vs-google-forms-for-laravel-teams): the moment you need the form on your domain, behind your auth, with your data in your database, you're shopping for a different category of tool.

Where Jotform still wins
------------------------

Jotform has the deepest field-type library on this list.

Signatures, image annotation, geolocation, payments, conditional logic that branches three levels deep, HIPAA-compliant plans for healthcare workflows. If your form is medical intake, an inspection checklist, a multi-step application with file uploads and signatures and a payment step on day one, Jotform's library is the reason you'd pick it. The templates do real work too — a Jotform user starts from a working form 80% of the time, not a blank canvas.

FilaForms covers most of the same field types, but the template library is smaller and the HIPAA story is "host it yourself in a HIPAA environment" rather than "click the BAA tier." For some teams that gap matters.

Where self-hosted wins
----------------------

Self-hosted wins on the things SaaS can't put in a feature row.

The data lives in your database. Joined to your users table, your orders table, your existing schema. No export job, no scheduled CSV pull, no third-party storage to audit before legal signs off on it.

The form lives on your domain. `forms.yourcompany.com` or `/feedback` inside your existing app, not `yourcompany.typeform.com`. Branded the same way the rest of the product is branded, because it's the same product.

The form sits behind your auth. Filament policies, Laravel gates, your existing session and SSO and team-scoping logic. Nothing to wire up across an API.

The bill stops growing with responses. There is no per-response cost. A spike in traffic doesn't move you up a tier. A viral form doesn't generate a renewal-time conversation with finance.

That's the unglamorous case for self-hosting in 2026. It isn't the cheapest path for a five-person team that doesn't run Laravel. It is the cheapest path for a Laravel team that already runs the server and would rather pay once than rent forever.

FAQ
---

### Is FilaForms cheaper than Typeform?

Over one year at the Growth tier (1,000 responses/mo), FilaForms Solo plus a small server lands near $279, against Typeform Plus at $948. Year two onward, the gap widens because the FilaForms license doesn't renew. For Laravel teams that already pay for a server, the answer is yes by a wide margin.

### Can I migrate from Typeform to FilaForms?

Yes, but the path is manual today. Export your Typeform responses to CSV from the Typeform dashboard, rebuild the form fields inside FilaForms' visual builder, and import the CSV into the new form's submissions table. FilaForms doesn't ship a one-click Typeform importer — rebuilding the form usually takes less time than the import script would.

### Does Tally offer self-hosted?

No. Tally is a hosted SaaS product. Data lives on Tally's infrastructure. If self-hosting is a hard requirement (data sovereignty, regulated industry, custom-domain auth), Tally is not the right pick regardless of price.

### What is the hidden cost of self-hosted forms?

A small server ($5–20/mo if you don't already run one), email delivery (free at low volume with SES, $15/mo with Postmark), and roughly an hour a quarter of maintenance for updates and patches. If your team already runs a Laravel app, most of these costs are already paid.

### Which form builder is best for a 5-person team?

It depends on stack. If you don't run Laravel and forms are edited by non-developers, Tally's free tier is hard to beat. If you run Laravel and your forms touch your users, your auth, or your domain, self-hosting with FilaForms costs less over two years and ships data that lives in your own database.

Most renewal invoices get clicked without thinking. The form tool is a small line item in a bigger budget, and a small line item isn't worth a Tuesday afternoon.

But form tools compound. The renewal you click this year is the same line in next year's budget, and the year after, growing with the response count. After three years it's a feature you'd rather own than rent.

If your form is the product, pay for the survey-feel. Typeform, Tally, and Jotform each earn their price in a specific case, and I've named where. If your form serves the product — a contact form, a lead capture, an internal request, a workflow trigger — then it's infrastructure, and infrastructure is the one thing you don't rent on a Laravel project. Look at [what FilaForms costs](https://filaforms.app/) and run the same math against your current invoice. If the numbers don't move you, stay where you are. If they do, you already know what to do next.
